Following several warnings urging truck drivers to be mindful of the height restriction barriers, (truck barriers) for articulated vehicles installed at Stadium, Ojuelegba and Dorma long Bridges, the Lagos State Government has resolved to commence prosecution of the drivers found culpable.
The barriers which were mounted to forestall incessant articulated vehicle accidents which has claimed lives and property in the State were often wantonly destroyed by some truck drivers with ignominy immediately they are installed which leaves the State with no other choice than prosecution.
A statement signed Friday by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi explained that the behavior of the truck drivers poses severe threat to the safety of all road users and the general public, saying such behaviour will no longer be tolerated.
It further read that willful destruction of public property is a criminal offense and the Lagos State Government is committed to prosecuting offenders within the ambit of the law.
“The general public are therefore urged to recognise the importance of these safety measures and report any suspicious activities to the Ministry of Transportation through; 09038208154 or 09034810153 as their cooperation is in line with safety and integrity of public infrastructure”, the statement stated..
Government must ensure that adequate / dangling precautionary measures to alert the unsuspecting Drivers are installed at distance before or while approaching the Barriers.
Therefore, for the sake of not regarding the Barriers as a bait to catch, there should be conspicuous dangling alerts, and the alert shouldn’t be just written words only, for the sake of those that may not be able to read or see where it is placed or the dark at night.
