The Lagos State Government has urged residents in the state to integrate non-motorised transport mode into their daily lives and also inspire others to join the movement, so as to reduce the level of carbon emission, and have a greener, healthier environment.

The state commissioner for transport, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi made the call on Sunday September 22, 2024, at the Sustainable Transport Festival, held in Lagos, as the state joined the rest of the world to observe World Car-Free Day, celebrated annually on September 22.
The programme was staged in partnership with the Lagos Urban Development Initiative LUDI. The Car-Free Day celebration aims to promote Non-Motorized Transportation (NMT), also known as Active Transportation, which includes walking, cycling, skating, and other small-wheeled forms of commuting.
Speaking at the event, the commissioner reiterated the state’s commitment to sustainable transportation even as he urged stakeholders and residents to promote and support transportation systems that are environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, and economically viable.
Osiyemi described the event as a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to create safer, more liveable communities by reducing reliance on cars while prioritizing sustainability, public health, and overall well-being.
“Today, we gather to celebrate the vision of a city that prioritizes people and the environment. By leaving our cars at home, we are taking important steps to reduce our carbon footprint, improve air quality, and make our streets safer for everyone,” Osiyemi stated.
“Car Free Day is more than just a break from driving; it is an opportunity to reimagine our urban spaces. It is about encouraging residents to embrace walking, cycling, and public transport while reconnecting with their neighbours and appreciating their local environment”.
“As we embrace car free streets today, let us reflect on the positive impact of these choices. Every step or pedal contributes to a greener, healthier Lagos. We encourage residents to integrate these sustainable practices into their daily lives and inspire others to join the movement.” Osiyemi added.
According to the commissioner, 11 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking or cycling tends to lower the risk of an early death and reduce the risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases.
In her remark at the event, the Executive Director, Lagos Urban Development Initiative (LUDI), Ms. Olamide Ejorh said Car-Free Day serves as a platform to advocate for a shift in transportation habits and to raise awareness of the need for government investment in Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) infrastructure.
In view of the rising cost of fuel in the country, Enorh noted that more people are now embracing alternative forms of transportation such as cycling and walking. She however calls for measures that will ensure the safety of those who have chosen Non-Motorized Transport .
The LUDI boss commended the State Government for incorporating cycling lanes on some roads and urged them to expand this infrastructure to further support the growing number of residents adopting non-motorized transportation.
The high point of the event was when the state transport commissioner led others in riding bicycles and many others involved in walking and skating
