As part of efforts to broker peace between the National Executive Members and the Lagos State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa on Thursday facilitated a peace accord to guide the union’s operations and interactions.
At the resolution meeting held on Thursday evening at Alausa, the Special Adviser emphasized that internal disharmony within the union could adversely affect other areas of commercial activities within the State. He urged the union’s leadership to prioritize peace for the benefit of all Stakeholders in the transport sector.
Speaking further on the Peace Accord, Hon. Giwa explained that by signing an agreement to maintain peace and order, the union reaffirms its commitment to fostering unity and stability while safeguarding members’ welfare.
The salient points of the Peace Accord, drafted for the National and State Union of NURTW duly signed by both National and State Executive Members includes Purpose and Commitment, reaffirmation of commitment to maintaining peace, order, and harmony within the union as well as focus on the safety and well-being of all union members.
Another point dwelled on declaration of peace where both parties agree to uphold peace and stability within the union and ensure all actions align with the union’s interests. Another point focuses on definition and consequences of breach of peace, with breach of peace to include violence, threats, intimidation, or actions disrupting union operations. Disciplinary actions for breaches include suspension, fines, expulsion, and legal consequences under federal and state laws.
Conflict Management Mechanisms was also highlighted with establishment of mediation and conflict resolution strategies to address grievances promptly. Communication Strategy touched to enhance open and regular communication between the National Executive and the State Chapter for transparency and constructive resolution of concerns.
There was also discussion on commitment to good conduct where members were urged to adhere strictly to the accord to preserve the union’s integrity and reputation. Education and Training discussed with focus on implementation of educational programs to promote respect, cooperation, and peaceful conflict resolution, as well as regular workshops and training sessions to ensure awareness of the consequences of peace breaches.
There will also be creation of a joint committee to monitor compliance and evaluate the effectiveness of peacekeeping measures.
